    Hadronic Decays of Excited Heavy Mesons

    We studied the hadronic decays of excited states of heavy mesons (D, D_s, B and B_s) to lighter states by emission of pi, eta or K. Wavefunctions and energy levels of these excited states are determined using a Dirac equation for the light quark in the potential generated by the heavy quark (including first order corrections in the heavy quark expansion).     Towards a lattice determination of the B∗BπB^\ast B \pi coupling

    The coupling gB∗Bπg_{B^\ast B \pi} is related to the form factor at zero momentum of the axial current between B∗B^\ast- and BB-states. This form factor is evaluated on the lattice using static heavy quarks and light quark propagators determined by a stochastic inversion of the fermionic bilinear. The \gBBP coupling is related to the coupling gg between heavy mesons and low-momentum pions in the effective heavy meson chiral lagrangian. The coupling of the effective theory can therefore be computed by numerical simulations. We find the value g=0.42(4)(8)g = 0.42(4)(8). Besides its theoretical interest, the phenomenological implications of such a determination are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure

    Lifetimes of b-flavoured hadrons

    I discuss the heavy quark expansion for the inclusive widths of heavy-light hadrons, which predicts quite well the experimental ratios of B_q meson lifetimes. As for Λb\Lambda_b, current determinations of O(mb−3){\cal O}(m_b^{-3}) contribution to τ(Λb)\tau(\Lambda_b) do not allow to explain the small measured value of τ(Λb)/τ(Bd)\tau(\Lambda_b)/\tau(B_d).     Steady-state visual evoked potentials and phase synchronization in migraine

    We investigate phase synchronization in EEG recordings from migraine patients. We use the analytic signal technique, based on the Hilbert transform, and find that migraine brains are characterized by enhanced alpha band phase synchronization in presence of visual stimuli. Our findings show that migraine patients have an overactive regulatory mechanism that renders them more sensitive to external stimuli.Comment: 4 page

    Can the electronic nose diagnose cronic rhinosinusitis? A new experimental study

    In otorhinolaryngologist's experience the nasal out-breath of people affected by chronic nasal or paranasal infections may be characterized by peculiar odours. In a previous study we showed that an electronic nose (EN), examining nasal out breath was able to distinguish subjects affected by chronic rhinosinusitis from healthy subjects. The present study is aimed at analysing the intensity and the quality of the odorous components present in the air expired by patients affected by rhinosinusitis, using a new EN based on gas-chromatography and surface acoustic wave analysis. In the gas-chromatographic tracings of the pathologic subjects there were six peaks, which were not present in control group cases. These peaks correspond to odorous components, whose chemical composition ranges from C6 to C14. Peaks obtained were compaired with other tracings revealed from specific bacterial and fungal cultures analyses and we appreciated some analogies

    Visualization of semileptonic form factors from lattice QCD

    Comparisons of lattice-QCD calculations of semileptonic form factors with experimental measurements often display two sets of points, one each for lattice QCD and experiment. Here we propose to display the output of a lattice-QCD analysis as a curve and error band. This is justified, because lattice-QCD results rely in part on fitting, both for the chiral extrapolation and to extend lattice-QCD data over the full physically allowed kinematic domain. To display an error band, correlations in the fit parameters must be taken into account. For the statistical error, the correlation comes from the fit. To illustrate how to address correlations in the systematic errors, we use the Becirevic-Kaidalov parametrization of the D -> pi l nu and D -> K l nu form factors, and a analyticity-based fit for the B -> pi l nu form factor f_+.Comment: 6 pp; v2 conforms with published version (one additional sentence and reference to clarify a point
